Inpatient Charge Forecaster

The Reden & Anders Inpatient Charge Forecaster, developed from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) MEDPAR data, provides information on billed charge trends by hospital. Historical information is provided for a range of calendar years with annual trends conveniently summarized.

The Inpatient Charge Forecaster transforms the CMS MEDPAR database into a format that provides information that can assist your management decisions.

Technology combined with expertise

In addition to the forecaster, Reden & Anders consultants analyze fee-for-service admissions and perform checks on the calculations in the MEDPAR database such as DRG price and total charges. Final reports include both unadjusted and case mix adjusted levels. The case mix adjusted values are calculated based on the case weights that CMS publishes annually.

Value

  • Compare charge levels for different hospitals as well as charge level trends
  • Make informed business decisions
  • More accurately forecast inpatient charges

Standardized reports

The standardized reports summarize MEDPAR database for all hospitals by state. In addition, forecasts of future charge levels are performed based on a hospital’s historical charge trends. The following information is available in the standardized report:

  • Average Charge Per Admission – Unadjusted and Case Mix Adjusted
  • Average Charge Per Day – Unadjusted
  • Average Medicare Allowed Per Admission – Unadjusted and Case Mix Adjusted
  • Average Medicare Allowed Per Day – Unadjusted
  • Cost to Charge Ratios
  • Average Cost Per Admission – Unadjusted and Case Mix Adjusted

Customized reports

Reden & Anders can accommodate customized requests for the Inpatient Charge Forecaster at the MDS and DRG levels. However, it should be noted that there are CMS-required minimums as to the data cell volume that may preclude us from releasing all data elements in the report for customized requests.
