John Lloyd has more than 25 years’ experience in the group insurance industry, managing the financing and administration of health and life products. This includes almost 15 years’ experience during the growth of Anthem Health from a single Blue Cross Blue Shield plan into one of the nation’s largest carriers. As senior vice president and business unit head at Anthem, he was responsible for all facets of pricing and delivery of group and individual health products. Prior to that position, Lloyd was in charge of actuarial pricing for Anthem, responsible for product development and pricing for all market segments. He also held pricing and financial reporting positions at Central Life Assurance and Lamar Life.
Subsequent to the above management and executive roles, Lloyd spent seven years as a consultant with Ernst & Young, concentrating on financial statement work, capital and surplus management, and merger and acquisition support. After joining Reden & Anders, he continued to work with financial performance but has also been engaged in numerous pricing and product development projects. His broad base of experience includes:
- Financial reviews and actuarial appraisals of HMOs, BCBS plans, and commercial carriers.
- Capital and surplus management for health entities, including risk-adjusted rates of return.
- Development and implementation of group and individual products—including pricing, contract language, underwriting, and filing.
- Product development, network contracting, and performance monitoring for HMOs.
- Merger and acquisition—both valuation and subsequent management activities required to merge operations, networks, and products.
- Medicaid, Medicare Supplement, and Medicare Advantage products and pricing.
- Policies and procedures for underwriting, actuarial, and benefits services for TPAs and for internal business units.
- Author of the Society of Actuaries study material “Health Reserves” used in the examination process for actuarial certification.
John is a fellow of the Society of Actuaries, a member of the American Academy of Actuaries (AAA). He services a general officer (and past chairman) of the Society of Actuaries’ Group Examination Committee and is a member of the AAA Actuarial Standards Board. John earned a Master of Science in statistics from the University of Cincinnati.
